It's a Crime How Much Students Forget!
When I started teaching, it was a common practice to spend the first month to six weeks reviewing everything the students learned the previous year.
Heck, this was common practice when I was in high school and almost caused me to drop out of Spanish altogether! I was bored in my level 2 class because I had learned everything and remembered it from level 1, but we spend the first six weeks reviewing it all.
But it's a crime how much students forget... at least with traditional textbooks. And it's no mystery why. Textbooks usually fill each chapter with 75-100 new vocabulary words and most schools have to cover at least twelve or more chapters per year. That's over 1000 new vocabulary words, most of which appear in the chapter and then never again.
But what if we could change that?
What if we could teach in a way that students remember most, if not all, of what we taught?
What if, not only what we taught, but students also remembered a lot more?
Well, let me tell you, it's possible!
When we as teachers focus on less, our students actually acquire and remember a whole lot more.
When we focus on a key set of verbs, students get the nouns, prepositions, articles, conjunctions, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs for free!
Why? Because we can't make a sentence with only a verb. We need other words and students acquire those words in context over and over again. They can't help but remember them!
